University of Surrey

A world-class research profile, and strong links with research-intensive institutions around the world.

The University of Surrey is known for its innovative and inventive approach. We have a tradition of doing things differently, and achieving results. Whether it’s our research park, widely regarded as the best in the UK, our widely-copied Professional Training Year preparing graduates for the workplace or our ability to spin out world-leading companies from our research base, Surrey has consistently been ahead of the curve.

Global focus, international reach

The university is engaged with projects and research collaborations around the world. Staff/student exchanges and research collaboration are developed through our partnerships with Massachusetts Institute of Technology, California Institute of Technology, the University of California, Los Angeles and North Carolina State University. Recently, in only the second collaboration of its kind to be approved by the Chinese government, the Surrey International Institute has developed a partnership with Dongbei University of Finance and Economics in China, giving the University of Surrey another powerful global connection for teaching and research.

Research at the University of Surrey

We undertake pioneering research with a focus on relevant and practical applications. Research at Surrey covers disciplines from ion beams and nanotechnology to dance and the study of sleep – helping industry to advance, and creating improvements in the areas of health, medicine, space science, the environment, communications, defence and social policy. Each year our research and allied commercial projects deliver £1billion to the regional economy via the Surrey Research Park and other external activity

In the latest assessment round, 88 per cent of research at the University of Surrey was rated world-class or of international quality, and we work hard to develop the outputs of our research into practical and commercial applications: to date Surrey has spun out 11 companies, including the 2008 sale of SSTL to EADS Astrium, the most profitable university spin out yet achieved by a UK institution.

The Surrey Research Park

In addition to our main campus, we also own and run the Surrey Research Park, a major centre of excellence in science, technology and engineering. Widely regarded as the best of its kind in the UK, the research park provides facilities for 110 companies engaged in a huge range of research, development and design activities, and is one of only three science parks in the UK still owned, funded and managed by the university that opened it.
